1. All empty cartons and wrappers are to be removed from the work area(s) as soon as practical and properly disposed of at the end of every workday. All storage and work areas are to be kept neat and free of debris at all times. Wipe up spills or gasoline, oil, paint, or flammable solvents promptly.
2. A 10:ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher must be located near the central storage area and must be maintained and readily available for instant use.
3. Smoke only in designated areas.
4. Avoid excessive dust build-up on stock, rafters, or ledges. Clean off dust and regularly lubricate electric motors and machinery to avoid friction and overheated bearings.
5. Store flammable liquids and gases in strict accordance with local codes. Dispense in approved type safety containers.
6. Stock should not be piled to within 18” of sprinkler heads and the area around control valves should be kept clear.
7. When utilizing heat producing equipment (welders, cutters, etc.) make sure that the area is clear of fire hazards, that all sources of potential fires are eliminated, and that adequate fire suppression equipment is in place and is readily accessible.
8. Do not use a salamander of other open-flamed devices in confined or enclosed structures. Vent heaters to the atmosphere and ensure adequate distances (a minimum of 3 feet) from walls, ceilings, floors, and other combustible items.
9. Know the locations of fire fighting equipment in your work area(s) and have a working knowledge of how to use it.
10. Discharged fire extinguishers need to be serviced immediately. Fire extinguishers also have to be visually inspected monthly and maintained yearly.
